Oscars: Chris Rock Helps Girl Scouts
Chris Rock did more for himself and the Girl Scouts than he could for the Academy Awards telecast
Did this year's Academy Awards seem like a better advertisement for Chris Rockthan the movies?
Rock enlivened Sunday's telecast with his take-no-prisoners observations about Hollywood and race.
He also did wonders for the Girl Scouts by promoting the organization's cookies. Rock gave the Girl Scouts $5.5 million in free advertising, the firm Joyce Julius & Associates told the media publication Digiday. The CEO of the Girl Scouts gave her sincerest thanks to Rock, the academy and the supportive celebrities.
But Rock could do less for the Oscars, which persist in giving 24 awards on the air. The ratings dropped 8 percent from last year.
There's clearly something wrong with an entertainment industry that fails to entertain. The awards portion turned so sluggish that Hollywood may want to rethink its big night. The show was better at putting people to sleep than celebrating movies.
